An Intimate Sorrow

"An Intimate Sorrow" is the start of an ongoing series that relates to the expression of emotion. This is the first painting that I've created- the statement is below. I would love your feedback on the piece!

An Intimate Sorrow

What does it feel like to lose something? What does the fragility of life invoke in a person? How can one express the deepest feelings of sadness and sorrow in a way that becomes tangible? How does one grieve for things they never had? And how does a person move on from a pain so unfathomable?

These were all questions I had in the wake of this project. My world was shaken this year as the first events of my life that allowed me to experience the new emotions of grief and sorrow came down on me. These are emotions that are rarely ever describable through the medium of words, but so often need to be expressed through some external outlet. For me, that expression has come through the medium of paint. My heart and mind feel and grieve. My body weeps and creates.

“Her Absence Is Like the Sky” arose out of the emotions experienced in the events that occurred around the birth and death of my niece, Quinn Olivia. She was a very long awaited-for child. Hearts that had already experienced death anticipated her birth. And she was born, a perfect 6 lbs 10 oz. but without a beating heart or breath in her lungs. We were hoping for a miracle and we waited to hear the wailing cry of a baby, instead we heard the wailing cry of a mother in anguish. Things were not supposed to be like this.

This loss seems to affect every area of life. Emotions overwhelm the soul. And this is expressed through the application of paint on a raw canvas. An egg in its nest is symbolic of life and fertility. There’s fragility in life, there’s fragility in the conception of a child, there’s fragility in the birth of a child. There’s a beauty experienced when hopes are fulfilled and there’s a darkness that death invokes when dreams are lost.  And, her absence is like the sky, spread over everything…

The Past is Present

I've realized that I really have not been keeping up on what I'm creating this semester, but there is a whole lot of creativity happening right now! This is a project I did for my Digital Photography class. We were required to create a collage using a scanned negative along with other source material. I acquired some knitting magazines this summer from the 1960's and wanted to incorporate them into the project. In each collage, the background material is a film picture that I took for my film photo class and I've collaged figures into the image as a way of juxtaposing old and new. I wanted to blur the line between past and present, to create something that look as though these images could have actually taken place.  I was pretty happy with the end result!

Light in Black and White

I've been taking a film photography class this semester and am finding it great fun to go through the whole process of developing from film strip to final print. I was able to produce two prints today! Perhaps I'll show them to you someday... We're working in black and white film this class, so I've been feeling inspired by old photographs and the early stages in the medium of capturing light. Compositionally, I think these early photographs are just beautiful.

School Update

I have been slightly drowning in homework lately...but mostly because I have no motivation to do it! It's mostly the papers. The one thing I DO have motivation for is painting- here's a little sneak peak into one of the pieces that I'm working on right now. It's a three-toned monochromatic painting. I AM having a little trouble deciding on the central colour, though. Perhaps you can help? I can choose between yellow as a complementary to purple or blue as a complementary to orange. What do you think- blue or yellow?

Slowly Going Crazy

I realize I've posted a lot of inspiration I've found online, but you may be thinking, "Jenni, what are you up to lately? Does your life consist of finding inspiration online?" Well, yes, in fact, it does...but in my spare moments, I've been working furiously on school projects. This is one project that takes up a huge chunk of my afternoon and has me slowly going insane in colour theory land. It also means I've been watching a lot of movies to keep me somewhat sane.

Nasty murky green paint water. The result of cerulean blue, ultramarine blue, cadmium yellow deep, cadmium yellow lemon, black and white!

So many swatches...Here you have my primary tints and shades chart and orange secondary chart.

And working on puke green. This is a nasty, nasty colour.

Can you see how I'm losing my mind?? Oh well, I only have 2 more to make. And then my technical project- another colour chart, and a 2'x2' painting...
